Photographs of beach huts on Mersea island.

Photographs of beach huts on Mersea island.

Queen Victoria made sea bathing fashionable with her changing "hut" on wheels which was trundled down the beach into the water. These bathing machines afforded privacy for ladies who could enter the water with only their heads being seen.

Modern beach huts can be found on many beaches and are used as shelter, for storage, cooking in, changing clothes and shade if the sunshine becomes too much.
