Hubert de Burgh. Hubert was to build Hadliegh castle, however, fell from favour in 1232, one year after he had been granted a licence to build “a certain castle at Hadleigh.” At his downfall the castle was already under construction and reverted to the King.

Standing on a high site overlooking Canvey Island and the Thames Estuary, the castle was in frequent use as a residence when the King brought his hunting parties to this part of Essex. In the reign of Henry III, when the country was at risk of attacks by French ships in the English Channel and Thames Estuary, it was repaired, refitted and, to a large extent, rebuilt. At this time the fortress was at the height of its fame - a sentinel over the Thames - and possessed extensive apartments for the royal family and guests, the King’s and Queen’s chambers, the High Tower, the Prince’s Tower and a prison.

Later, the castle and its park formed part of the dower of several of the English queens, including Elizabeth Woodville (wife of Edward IV) and three of the wives of Henry VIII – Catherine of Aragon, Anne of Cleves, and Catherine Parr.
